Holistic Centre… By your touch I am healed
Holistic healing means taking a holistic approach when seeking treatment for imbalances and choosing to live a more balanced lifestyle. What primarily distinguishes holistic healing apart from alternative medicine, complementary medicine, and integrative medicine is that physical health is not necessarily the main focus. Even so, it is often the experience of physical discomfort that will first prompt a person's pursuit of holistic healing. Holistic healing is not an "alternative" to conventional medical care. Holistic or "wholistic" healing addresses all parts of the individual, not just the physical aspect of a person where manifested illnesses are most apparent.
Holistic healing is really a lifestyle approach. The holistic approach goes far beyond the Mind-Body connection of finding and maintaining wellness. Overall wellness and “wholeness" is highly valued. A person who embraces the desire to find wholeness within his own being soon learns the importance of tending to relationships, caring for the planet and our environments, compassion for humankind in general, accepts and tolerates differences among a diverse population of people.
Arnold-Taylor defines holistic massage as "a treatment related to the whole person - body, mind and spirit." By contrast, the Arnold-Taylor definition conveys the fact that holistic therapies are attempting to understand and treat the underlying causes of illnesses rather than just treat the symptoms. In many cases this is an admirable approach which results in significant cost and social benefits compared to traditional medicine.
Emotions are sometimes deeply buried in the mind and expressed as physical symptoms. The holistic approach addresses the underlying feelings and emotions as well as treating the physical symptoms. Holistic massage, in particular, uses trusted touch to create an environment in which the patient feels safe enough to allow the buried emotions to surface and to be resolved.
Firstly, holistic treatments are focused on self-healing. The patient is led to understand that given the right environment, they can heal themselves; the holistic treatment provides the necessary knowledge and conditions for this to happen.
Secondly, holistic therapy concentrates on treating the underlying root causes of the problem, not just the symptoms the patient reports. This requires that the therapist is adept at counseling the patient. Ultimately, in keeping with the first principle outline above, the patient must understand the cause of his/her illness and want to treat it.
Thirdly, the holistic approach treats the mind and body as tightly interconnected systems with each affecting the other. This is taken for granted in everyday life, but a practical consequence is that even if the patient has not recognized the underlying psychological causes i.e. stress, they can still benefit from the physical effects of massage. And in the hands of a competent therapist, the patient will come to understand the causes of the stress and be able to make the changes in his/her life to address them.
In conclusion, holistic practices represent empowerment for the patient. They allow those who want to take responsibility for their own well being the opportunity to do so. Holistic practitioners help people help themselves.
